Historical Background

        Name Kanpur is a transformed version of its original name Kanhapur given by the two rulers Hindu Singh of Sachendi and Ghanshyam Singh of Ramaipur. The british ruler Hobson Johnson found the word difficult to pronounce and he changed it to Cawnpore. Later it came close to its name as Kanpur. The independent emergence of its new district recorded historical pangs.

 The responsibility of administration in the district rests mainly with the District Magistrate and the Chief Development Officer. Two Additional District Magistrates and one District development Officer, one Sub Divisional Magistrate at each Tehsil and one Block Development Officer at each Block assist the district administration. One Superintendent of Police at district level and a Deputy Superintendent of Police at Tehsil level serve for the protection of life and property of the people.

Demographic Features

     Kanpur Dehat has a population of 13.03 lakhs (as per 1991 census) out of which females are 5.93 lakh and males are 7.09 lakh. The ratio between males and females is 1000 : 836, while this ratio at state level is 1000:879. Rural population outweighs urban population. Only 74.6 thousand persons stay in towns. Number of females for every 1000 males in cities is 553. The population of Scheduled Caste persons in the district is 24.34%. The population of Scheduled Tribes is negligible.
